In preparation for the upcoming 2nd-annual Offense-Defense All-American Bowl, Offense-Defense has released a progress report detailing the on-field exploits of some of the players who participated in the inaugural contest held last January. Virtually all of the 88 young men who competed in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl have gone on to find spots on Division-I collegiate rosters throughout the country. Some of the more notable are as follows:
Cameron Newton, Offense-Defense All-American Bowl MVP is currently spending time as a true freshman backup to Florida Gator star quarterback Tim Tebow. In his first ever appearance in the fourth quarter of a 49-3 victory over Western Kentucky, Newton scored a touchdown on a 3-yard carry to help determine the final score. Then, in the fourth quarter against SEC rival and then-22nd ranked Tennessee on September 15th, Newton again scored a rushing touchdown from 3 yards out.
Wes Byrum, kicker for Team East in the All-American Bowl, has put up impressive numbers so far with the Auburn Tigers. In four games, Byrum is 6-for-8 overall on field goal attempts with a successful 49-yard conversion to his credit to go along with a 13-for-14 success rate on PATs. Earlier this year, Byrum was a Lou Groza weekly award nominee, cementing his status as one of the top kickers in the country only weeks into his collegiate career.
Brandon Saine, one of the standout running backs in the All-American Bowl, is putting up impressive numbers early on in his freshman season at Ohio State. Thus far, in only three games, Saine has accumulated 153 yards rushing on just 28 carries for a 5.5 yards per carry average. He reeled off an impressive 37-yard touchdown scamper against Washington in what was easily his biggest highlight reel moment so far this season. Projected over an entire season, Saine looks to garner close to 500 yards on the ground to go along with 6 touchdown carries in what would be an impressive rookie year on a team as stacked with talent as the Buckeyes are.
The Offense-Defense All-American Bowl will feature 88 of the finest high school football players on national television January 4th, 2008 at Orange Bowl Stadium in Miami, FL. The teams will be divided into East and West squads, both coached by a cadre of the most qualified personnel available including legendary ex-NFL wide receiver and current HBO football analyst Cris Carter. The game will be broadcast live nationwide by Fox College Sports.
